I can't begin to count the number if times over the last few months my drinking buddies and I have discussed entering Kinetics under our happy hour club's name - liquid-therapy. One such night was March 23rd, 2001. Andy Spencer, who went with me last year to Kinetics for the first time, was sitting next to me watching Michigan State battling for another NCAA win in the March Madness tournament. The conversation drifted, as it did many nights, to Kinetics. We didn't have our sponsorship locked in, we didn't have a theme nailed down, we didn't have anything we really needed to make it happen. It was just bar talk.
Then a girl Andy worked with knew some people who had entered kinetics a few years back. They entered with a yellow rubber ducky float that ended up in Life magazine. Life magazine!
Kinetics was no longer just bar talk, this was an event that shaped contemporary American culture. Right then and there, (ok, maybe also at the Boulder Theatre with Mark Casler a little drunk and swearing we had sponsorship) we decided to call back Eric. Eric was an ex-kinetics person with a craft to sell, and now we were entered for sure.
We picked the craft up tonight. And guess what? In a two page spread in Life magazine, the only other photo beside the yellow rubber duck, was his ex-, our soon-to-be our, Kinetics float! Were renting-to-own, the below boat for this year's race!
